Test-Drive a Retirement Dream Home with a Vacation

Beachfront condos, European villas, and gated country club communities are central to many seniors' retirement dreams. After decades of city and suburban work grinds, a fresh start in a new place can give retirees a little bit more of that "endless vacation" feel, especially if the sun is warm, the water is cool, the local culture is vibrant, and the fairways are bright green.
But sometimes the fantasy of relocating in retirement doesn't live up to the reality – or justify the costs and hassle of moving. Before you commit to this life-changing decision, consider three ways that you can "test-drive" your dream retirement destination.
1. Pause the "vacation."
If you're leaning towards a retirement destination that you first visited on vacation, you might have unrealistic expectations for what living there will be like.
You won't be living at a resort. You probably won't be eating in top restaurants every single day. During "off months," when beaches and slopes are closed and there aren't festivals every weekend, there might not be as much for you to do.
In fact, an off month might be the ideal time for you to visit and try living like a local. Instead of staying at a hotel, rent a house or an apartment for a week. See what's going on downtown on a Tuesday afternoon. Take a walk though a neighborhood that interests you. Buy groceries. Play a round at the closest golf course. Do all the everyday things you envision doing once you stop working and you'll get a better sense of whether or not this new place could feel like home.
2. Check the infrastructure.
The older you get, the harder it will be for you and your spouse to get around on your own. A retirement home has to be able to accommodate your needs through multiple stages of your golden years.
If you do plan on driving for as long as you can, rent a car and see how easy it is to get from Point A to Point B at various times during the day. Your favorite scenic route might be a joy to drive during lunch. After 5 you might have flashbacks to 40 years of gridlock. Try parking near various spots you might visit regularly. Maybe a little help from your phone's map app is all you need to get where you need to go.
Or, you might find that this town just isn't as car friendly as your current home. Give public transportation a try and see how convenient buses, trains, and ride-sharing options are. Are there tradeoffs you're willing to make between costs and convenience?
3. Explore essential networks.
Retirees should have easy access to people, places, and institutions that will keep them healthy, happy, and engaged.
How close would your doctor’s office be? What about specialists and urgent care? If you’re moving out of state, is your Medicare plan portable or will you need to switch for better local coverage?
Are there theaters and museums you’d like to visit? Good restaurants for nights out with your spouse? A community college where you can take classes? Parks and recreational facilities where you can stay fit and work on your backhand?
And what about your spouse? Will they be able to have fun during the parts of the day you don’t spend together?
Finally, who else will you spend time with? Do you have friends and family close by? Are you planning to join local organizations or senior center programs so that you can expand your social circle?
